Had a little fun over the weekend until I Hi-Centered on a pine tree log in the path. No big deal. Just whip out the old come-a-long and I'm on my way. Later that afternoon I notice a small drip in the driveway from the rear end!. Hmm I wiggle my way under the truck just to find a small crack in the 3rd member cover!! Oh Man! I cant believe I was so stupid as to not check for damage after the tree had set me free!. What I also could not believe is the cover is made of Fiberglass!!!! A 2WD I could understand but on a 4X4? Geeze
My question is anyone have a good source for a After Market cover? I would like to go back with sometning a little tougher than what came on the truck. Crome maybe? heheheh
Autozone has no listing for the part as others I have check. I dont care for the idea of scoping out the local junk yards.
You dont do junkyards???? Thats the first place I would look for this. But, you might find it at jcwhitney.com The diff cover on my 87 Ranger is steel, dont know if yours has the same diff as my Ranger though. Or click on the "directory" link for links to wrecking yards that sponsor FTE.
I try to avoid the junk yards around here. 50 miles each way to work each day and about an hour for lunch. Had a hotdog while I was looking around 3 of the "U-Pull-It" yards today. Man it was HOT today in Shreveport Louisiana.
I found ONE on a ranger p/u It too was some sort of plastic/fiberglass. I tipped the fork lift tractor driver to hike it up so I could stand under it and remove the cover. Problem was they drilled a hole in it to drain it of oil before letting the public have first pick of parts. Some sort of local law here.
I didnt notice the small hole in it until I got it off. No big deal. I picked up some stuff to mix up and plug the hole. Cleaned it all up with a power washer and installed it tonight in the driveway. The oil plug had a little sluge on it (guess thats okay for 88k miles) Filled it with new oil and took the daughter out for a driving lesson. She mastered the "take off on a hill" tonight with out burning out the clutch so we are in business. I will check it in the morning for a drip or two. She loves that little truck as much as I do. My 2001 Ram 1500 sits in the driveway most of the time.
Congrats on the fix and more importantly congrats on the succesful driving lesson. I sure wish my dear "I just want to put in D & go" wife would let me teach her how to drive a clutch so that i would'nt have to put up with all the extra care/maintenance/MONEY it takes to keep her idiot automatics running. Driving a manual trans has saved me a lot of money over the years and will do the same for your daughter. Just curious but what did you use to seal the hole in the cover?
