oil pressure

70 torino 302 rebuilt about 3yrs ago, has not been driven. For past few months started on occasion and the engine sounds great. Just installed exhaust sys. and was going to take on test run, now the oil pressure light stays on. Just replaced the sending unit about 3 months ago. . Also have oil pressure gauge that builds, and stays around 30-35psi within about 20-30 sec's. Can anyone tell me if this is normal operating range? Also, after shut down detect air excape thru dipstick tube for about 20-30 sec's. Wonder if it is something i should be concerned about. Thought perhaps normal while engine is seating in.

Any opinions, suggestions would be appreciated,

thx,
dave

The o/p sounds about right. The hissing sound is cylinder pressure escaping past the rings. It should diminish as the engine gets broken in.

The oil pressure should be 40-60 PSI with the engine operating at 2000 RPM and fully warmed (operating temperature). Other readings tell you little to nothing. Use a good quality mechanical gauge to get the pressure reading. Do not use the factory electrical gauges. They are not reliable.

Oil pressure that takes a considerable time to build up could be a problem.
30-35 PSI shortly after starting is not high enough. It should rise rather quickly and read at least 40 PSI when the engine is cold. Probably at least 55 PSI when it is cold. It will drop off once the engine warms. If you aren't getting pressure at startup, you also have a problem.... Like I said, use a good mechanical gauge to find out.

Yes, increment from 30 to 60 on the electrical oil pressure gauge. Once get windshield installed intend to take to shop who rebuilt and have them give a look over. Got oil presure light working, it was the sending unit.

Appreciate the input

sounds as though your pcv system isn't operating correctly there shouldn't be crankcase pressure.

Will check pcv system tomorrow. Found the valve is operating freely, opens on vac. Not that knowledgeable, fortunately have one of the most basic systems. Could not find factory replacement line so had to make something up. The devise may be causing a restriction. Could not find any spec's in shop manual, not sure if can use vac gauge to test for any restriction. Thought best way of testing is to disconnect pcv from valve cover and test operation with the engine running.

Appreciate the input,
dave
