New to the RV world... on our last trip from Jax, MS to Gatlinburg TN, pulling a 5,000 lbs load with a 1990 Ford F250 7.3 L Diesel with E40D noticed trans leak 1/2 cup of fluid @ fuel stop in Birmingham AL,. Let cool for 2 hours and moved on ... no apparent problems... Trip home different story. Began leaking trans fluid again... at the same spot going home, Birm. AL. total trip is about 500 were about 1/2 way ... a friend towed trailer home and we drove my truck 150 miles with overdrive OFF ... and no load at the advice of another friend.
I replaced this transmission in Oct. 2001 with a "crate" trans from Ford thinking this would solve my problem. the Other trans began the same behavior. The old trans had 97,000 miles and previous owner pulled a 11,000 lbs 5th wheel a short distances for local camping. The replacement trans has about 22,000 and I pull a 4,000 lbs travel trailer. I bought the truck used at 97,000 miles. .... someone indicated that these trans had a recall on them ....... that my replacement trans probably did not include any updates..???? that Ford had an assembly plant in the Midwest and they didn't includ the updates on even the "Ford rebuilt trans".
Need advice on next step .... since I just spend 5,000 painting and fixing up this truck (looks great!) but I need it to tow my load an cruise about 65mph on the interstate.

A few tranny shops that are known for their work on the E4OD are bullydog.com, baumannengineering.com and Brianstruckshop.com, you might want to check with some of these guys to see what all of the updates are, I know when I had my E4OD done locally, they dident have a clue as to all of the the better items to install.
you are the only one to reply to my request .... so I'm a little dissapointed ... I didn't give up .. and frankly continued to pray that I'd get some wisdom about this situation.
Believe it or not one of the three tranny shops could identify the problem. A friend brought a diesel maniac ??? to my house and he states the problem is a timing advance going out on the fuel injector pump. (sounds like I know what I'm talking about). He states this caused the motor to work harder than normal, especially under a load, and generate heat and overheat the trans .... which caused the problem.... we'll know soon.... the fuel injector pump rebuild is a $320 fix .... I've been driving the truck around home and the trans seems to be fine... but I've not towed with it....
seems that saying that "things are not always as they seem" !! is true in this case...
I have a 96 ford F250 PSD and tow a 10,000lbs fifthwheel. The E40D trans is not the best trans in the world. I had to have mine re-built a year ago. I didn't know better and towed in over drive up a very long and steep hill. The only time I put it in over drive now, is on a flat road going 65 or better. I also put a temp gauge on the transmisssion. When the transmission was re-built. He up graded it with a triple locking torque converter and clutches. Put a new E-prom for the ECU, which change my shifting patterns
