400 heads

on a 400/351m does it matter what head is on what side

No. But, as you already know, place close attention to the head gaskets. They have a 'Front' embossed into the gasket material at one end. Often, when you put them in, one side will have a blue surface up, the other will have a grey surface up and it will look totally wrong, but it will be right.

Yes, I speak from experience, make sure the "front" is towards the radiator end of the engine ON BOTH SIDES! Otherwise you'll have the boiling problem that I had after some no-mind put the passengers side gasket on backwards and covered up the coolant pasage at the back of the engine.
