2004 FX4 18" factory wheels/rubber. Have had shimmy since day one. The truck is 16 weeks old with 25000km on it. Ford replaced the drive shaft and installed a "dampering kit" at around 10000km. They said it was fixed, they obviously did not test drive the truck after the repair. Had it back to them at 19000km they had to replace the throttle body assembly, they looked into the shimmy again. When I picked up the truck there was no coments on the shimmy.......the service advisor just agreed that yes there is a shimmy???? I know they have no clue how to fix it. The service advisor said he would call me back to arange another appointment..... That was 2 weeks ago and I am still waiting.
My steering wheel has a shimmy when I apply the brakes....only has 8500 miles. Taking it in this week to have it checked out.
A shimmy when you apply the brakes is probably warped rotors. This can happen if the brakes overheat from excessive use, such as lots of braking descending a mountain or steep grade.
1200 miles and no shimmey at an speed up to the chip kicks in, Goodyear 18's. I rotate my own tires and always will the so called mechanics will not use their impact wrenches on my tires. I use the old cross wrench and then I torque to factory specs.
I have driven probably 3 or 4 04 F150s that have had the shimmy and have no idea why they do it...usually have the tires re-balanced and on some it fixed it and others it just helped some. The trucks have mostly been XLTs with cast alum. 17" wheels but one was a Lariat with the 18s. If I ever get it figured out why they do that I will put up a post.
04 Sup Crew w/ the stock 18" tires- Steering Wheel shimmy'd since day two (of course I didn't notice it before leaving the lot on day one) and I have 1,800 miles now. Will be bringing it in for this issue on the first oil change.
