hi everyone! i am in the process of changing my motor in my 55 f100. got a 86 motor out of a mercury station wagon. my truck had a 239 v-8 in it and i am goin to a 302. the truck is a three speed and i need to decide on what to do with it. i would like to keep it a standard but i have an automatic with the 302. it would be cheaper i guess to keep the automatic on it. i am also goin to need to change the motor to a carb instead of fuel injection . this is all new to me. hope i can get some pointers on what i need to do. thanks
Hi, and welcome to FTE! I think I would go with the RUG toploader trans, they're not too hard to find and have an overdrive 4th gear. They look just about like a regular Ford toploader 4 speed trans. If you want, I can give you some links with more info on identifying them. If the auto you have is an OD auto, I might consider staying with that for simplicty and economy. As in both fuel milage and not having to spend more bucks on another trans. -TD
its to bad you didnt have a carb engine.you have to change everything on it.you need to pick up a scrap 302 with carb.you will have to build mounts front and back.
thanks for the info I think i will try to make the automatic work. wont like it as well as the standard but oh well at least i will be driving it for less cash. thanks
You really only need to change the intake manifold to run a carb, I think you could even run a two-barrel carb on that manifold, if it's the throttle-body injection. (And you can hit the edit button to add to your post within one hour of the first post. Uses less bandwidth that way) -TD
If there are any electonics associated with the trans on the Merc, you will need to swap those over to make it work too... Might be looking to keep the electronics for the whole engine.
