the master cylinder in my 64 finally bit the dust.when i install the new one,do i have to bleed all four drums?i`m considering upgrading to a dual sump m.c. from a 68 galaxie.i read here somewhere that i would have to install a proportioning valve to the rear.do i have to buy the expensive adjustable one,or could i get away with a borrowed one from a later model truck?would i be able to tie in to my rear lines or would i need to run new ones.............wayne
The brake system is a closed system, so when the lines are disconnected, air is introduced into it. Once the new parts are installed the air must be purged, and an excellent time to replace the old fluid with new.
Wayne, I did that conversion on my 63. I'm not sure about using other proportioning valves, but I found when looking for one, that even later model standard ones were kind of expensive.
As to your other question, you can reuse just about all of your lines but no-one would recommend it. Just measure each piece of line and go buy a pre-flared replacement from napa. A forty inch piece only costs about six dollars, and they get cheaper as they get shorter. You can replace all the lines on your truck, plus buy the extra ones you need for the conversion, and you will only be out about 20 bucks. Also, don't worry about having to bend the lines yourself, they bend easily, and you don't need any special tools to do this.
I have some pics of my conversion in my gallery but admittedly the pictures are of a poor quality...
thanks 63.i looked at your gallery, and it all looks easy enough.i think your right about replacing those lines.it`s really hot here now and i was just trying to get off as easy as possible.where did you get your proportioning valve?i was hoping to find it locally.thanks for your help.nice looking truck..........wayne
