96 ranger 4x4 problem

96 ranger 4x4 problem
my 96 ranger xl 4x4 is haveing a 4x4 problem. i hoped it was the dash switch. and it wasnt. so the next thing i tried was the elec. motor on the back of the transfer case. i picked one out of an explorer and thats not working either.
the problem is my 4x4 light keeps flashing and i cant engage the 4x4. so im looking for suggestions. i supose the motor i got today could be crap. but who knows
