i have a 1985 F150 300 6 cylinder and i was wondering if there was some way to put a code reader on the motor and see if any sensors are bad? The well known kooskia guffy!
On your fender, behind the battery, there should be two plugs, one is a wide triangular looking one and the other a single wire plug all but attached to the other plug, those are your diagnostic plugs. 1985s should have them. There is a long procedure on how to do it in Haynes manuals using a meter and jumpers but it isn't worth the heartburn. Go to any auto parts store and you can pick up a checker for about $30 bucks and it pays for itself the first time you use it.
Just follow the instructions, it is very easy to use. If you haveb't had codes checked in a while, you most likely will come out right off the bat with EGR and maybe O2 sensor. Just about every car or truck I check has them. EGRs can usually be cleaned and don't require a new purchase. EGR sensors and O2s usually have to be replaced but first check the codes, then dump the memory and and see how it does after checking connections and driving it a bit. Sometimes you luck out.

your 85 inline six does not have things like an O2 sensor unless you have fuel injection. I have not herd of computer testing an 85. I thought that started in 86. I could be wrong. i guess the biggest question is whether you have a carb or fuel injection.
My 85 300/6 (bought new) had an O2 sensor, and a computer controlled 1 barrel carb. A Ford tech told me that 85 was the only year for this type of arrangement, and it was a total failure.
I became so frustrated with this mess, I bought a 95 302HO crate motor, threw the computer in the trash along with the 300/6 and I ain't looked back.
I'm happy with the AFB, and the 302. Heck, it even passed emissions tests in Texas for 4 years, without the controls.
