Well I had to try the K&N Air Filter on my 04 FX4 Scab 5.4L. After reading the hundreds of threads on the subject it was not a clear cut do it or don't do it. It is one of those issues that you just have to try and see if you like it. So that is what I am going to do. Just put it in and hopefully I will see some results. Even if the results are minor (on the positvie end) that will be fine with me. I know some of you are sitting back thinking, what a dumb a$$ for wasting his money and others are saying you won't be sorry. I figure at $50 bucks for filter and oil and cleaner it is one of the cheapest aftermarket products that you can buy and if it doesn't do worth a darn than I am not out a whole lot of money.
I was in the same boat...do it, not do it. Well I didnt get a K&N but I did buy a Fram Air Hog, same thing-cotton gauze reusable filter. Anyway, here's the good news: my mileage increased by 2-3 miles per gallon. That's not much, but every little bit helps.
Also, look at it this way: the stock filter is 17 bucks each. You'll make out good in the long run.
An air filter change won't increase gas mileage by 2-3 mpg. That's nonsense.
If you havent tested it yourself I suggest you not comment. I have checked mileage for every tank since I bought the truck (going on 9000 miles now)...kind of an obsession. Checking on just one tank isnt accurate so I record miles and gallons used for three tanks then figure the average. Every single time I checked it I got 13-14 mpg. With the first check after the filter change it was 15-16mpg and has been that way for 3 straight checks. I think that pretty much says that I get 2-3 mpg more now. The only mod I've done is the air filter and in my notebook I marked the date I put it in so I know that the mileage increased from that point on and not before. Thank you very much.
i cant say that i have seen that big of a difference in just a drop in filter, but i have seen a 2-3 mpg gain with an cold air intake on previous vehicles that i have owned. and when i put my chip in as long as i drove normally i got a total of about 4-5 mpg. im hoping to be able to do that with my f150.
i normally get 13 mpg city driving, which is mostly what I do. The other day I had the chance to put 250 miles of mostly highway miles. I got 18 mpg with the A/C on . I think I'll just leave it the way it is.
