This is a toughie. I am trying to order a rebuild kit from Northern Auto parts for my .030 over 390. The sales guy tells me he doesn't know what the ring gap is with the kit, and file fit rings are an extra $100!! Does anyone know of a good moly ring set that is file fit and not $115 / set? If not, does anyone know what the standard gap is for the kit?
Thanks
Why do you need file fit? They have tons of 4.080 rings for a 390. I will check summit and see how much their file fit rings are. Thye shouldn't be more than $75.
The width of the rings is going to be the kicker. What widths do you have?
Here are the standard gap rings.
SLP-E-180K030 Chromemoly, 4.080 in. bore, 5/64 in. top ring, 3/32 in. second ring, 3/16 in. oil control ring, piston ring se... Monday $50.39
I don't know what width I have. I am using a set of forged speed pro L2291F, and I couldn't find any good info on their website. I am a big fan of file fit rings for the same reason I gap my own spark plugs. Not to mention that bore sizes differ. Now I assume that the Northern Auto Parts kit included rings of the "standard" gap, but gaps differ per piston design, right? I really was hoping to at least get a few choices with the gap size, so I could order the smallest and file fit them myself. If you know what the right widths and gaps are for these pistons, I could potentially pick out an inexpensive set and tell the northern guy to substitute them. Let me know.
Thanks!
