I just bought a 97 exped with 108,000 miles love the thing except I have to push the unlock on the key fob to disable the theft system other wise it will not start if turned off . any help would be great
Sounds like a short in the anti-theft for the ignition cut-off. I haven't received any bullitens for my 97, but check the recall/tsb's. I need to read something and will try to get back to ya soon.
ok, this is not a guarantee fix, but it could be the ignition switch. Its under the steering column, under the cover shroud. If you want, you can run a continuity test (ohmmeter), but I don't have the specs and I don't know if anyone here has them so you'll know what readings you need. If you just want to replace it, sorry don't know the cost either, you need to disconnect your battery, turn the key cylinder to the run position, remove the steering shroud. Then unplug the ignition switch electrical connector and remove the switch retaining screws (they are torx head).
Disengage the ignition switch from the actuator pin and remove it.
When you reinstall the new one or if you find the old one is good, make sure the actuator slot is in the run position, the new one should already be in that position. When installing you may have to move the position of the switch to line up the screws.
Someone may have replaced this previously and failed to do this check, so as you disassemble, check as you go, could be someone elses screwup.
