I've got a 2004 F150 Larait with 5.4 l. The dash read out indicates that the engine is operating in "safe mode". I know that's supposed to happen if it's our of cooling fluid but the radiator is full and so are the oil and tranny. Any ideas?????
try posting in the forums that fits your vehicle or the problem. Try reading through some of them and see if someone else has had a similar problem and what was discussed or suggested by other FTE members.
Oh, and welcome to the forums.
your best answer will probably be found at the service department at your closest dealer. i dont know if i would drive it there though...may be safer to have it towed. the dealer should cover the costs of the tow.
Thanks The dealers "tech" said that he never heard of "safe mode" either. I called them back and asked another "tech" and he waid that if the system detects that the radiator is empty as in a hose breakage, the engine operates in "safe mode" The engine will use only the outside four cylinders and will allow you to drive 35 miles st no more than 50 to 55 mph. Cool idea, pardon the pun, if it works right. I'm bringing it in on Tuesday. I'll let you know what they say.
Earlier threads have pointed to a) bad oil temp sensor in the pan, or b) bad sensor in the throttle body. Replacing the temp sensor or entire throttle body got rid of the "safe mode" operation. Both fixes were warranty, of course.
Do a search in this forum back around the March/April/May timeframe and there are several threads on this subject. Try subjects "safe mode" and "limp home mode". Good Luck!!
