I have a 98 Explorer sport with lots-o-miles (64k) and I'm hearing a 'creaking floor' type of sound from the front end at low speed that seems to be suspension related. Could this be worn/bad springs?
Also, has anyone tried aftermarket shocks to try and smooth out the ride on an Expl. Sport? With the tires fully inflated ;-) it's kinda firm.
My '98 4-dr. has 72,000 miles. I recently replaced shocks with very little difference noted (slightly better ride). Figured shocks had to be gone after so many miles, and old shocks really compacted easy when off, but new Edlebrocks ($75 each)had little impact. Which is surprising since the same shocks on my 32,000 mile Expedition brought it back to new handling. The good news with both is that the ride didn't deteriorate and was very slightly smoother. Next I'm going to try Pirelli Scorpion Zero performance tires since the current Firestone HT's seem mushy and don't have good grip.
I'd change shocks and get better than standard, but don't spend more than $35-$40 each and don't expect big change, just piece of mind.
I too have a creaking in the right front end of my 98 Explorer. Shocks are new, bushings are good, everything in the front end is good (just had and inspection and alignment). Funny thing, the creaking seems to occur only when it's warm (over 75 degrees). Any one have any ideas?
Mine's the same way, only hear it when outside temps are warm or when truck is warmed up. A friend of mine said that he had the same problem with his Bronco. He would occasionally power wash the front suspension and then get underneath and hand grease every moving part he could find (in the front suspension) and the creaking would go away for a month or two. Not much of a solution huh.
