So has anyone dropped the cash on one of these cheap air intakes on eBay? I'm tempted, but wanted to get some imput from anyone who has. Anyone in particular that I should avoid? Thanks!

I know exactly what you are talking about. They are like 285.00 dollars for a K&N one but there are cheap ones for like 35-45 dollars! I wanted to ask this same exact question. Any input will help both Jonesy44 and I!!!!!
Jonesy - They don't look all that bad. But the ones that they say "Will fit both 4.6L and 5.4L", how is that possible, the two hoses that go to the air intake are at different spots on the intake? Am I right? Oh well. I want to get one...

There is a difference, but you have to cut those hoses anyway and then reconnect them to the new intake. The kit should come with the extra hoses and clamps, if not keep looking for another kit. I would still go with a "name brand" kit, but thats just me.
Well, not any particular one. They all look pretty much the same.
I've seen a few K&N, Air Force One, and AirAid products on there. And I don't really mind droppin' a few bills for a K&N. I know you get what you pay for, but I also want to get my money's worth! If the name is the only real difference between the $50 eBay model and the $200++ K&N, you can guess which one I'm going for.
But that is the whole basis of my question. Is there a "real" difference between the two??? That's why I was curious how many of y'all out there have went with the cheap, imported eBay model.
One difference in a performance intake is wether or not it is a "true" cold air intake or one that draws air from under the hood. An intake that sucks outside air from a hole in the fender well perform better than one that draws hot air from under the hood. In city driving, the air under the hood can get quite hot.
I would make sure the intake is made by a reputable company and research the product and company before bidding.
I bought a cold air intake from e-bay last year. It was shipped from the manufacturer, was under $200 and has performed very well. It came with a K&N air filter that goes in the carbon box.
