I'm new here, but not to old fords, I've used and driven them, but only performed basic maintenance. Just took my 77 f150 4x4 into the shop for poor steering, dealer said it was wheelbearings and bushings on my "center link". $400 to replace the bushings and replace wheel bearings. Is this something I could've easily done w/a socket set and floor jack?
I've been doing a little work here and there on the 'ol girl, and I beginning to like it more and more, I joined up to learn from others, god knows I could use any instruction I can get!
Shorty, I am under the assumption that when they changed the wheel bearing's they also put in new grease seal's. Also you cannot replace the "bushing's" on a center link. They are a part of the new center link. I do not have a price list in front of me but I would bet the price on a 4x4 center link is about 75 buck's, figure 12 buck's each for the bearing's and another 10 a piece on the seal's. Just those piece's are about 145 buck's. Now don't forget it need's to be aligned after the new center link is put in and you also have to pay a mechanic and the light bill and so-on.
I would think you got a fair price especially from a dealership for 400 buck's.
Center link and track bar are two different thing's. Track bar bushing replacement is fairly easy to do if you have the right tool's. The most important tool to do track bar bushing's would probably be a torch to heat up the nut's. I still do not think 400 is out of line from a dealer for that job.
That actually sounds prettty reasonable. The last thing I was going to let the dealer do was spark plugs on my van (in sig) but they wanted $265 to do it....
It might have cost a pretty penny, but that little Ford O' Mine drives straight as an arrow, even with the pickup camper on it. I'm going to take it halfway across Montana and catch me some trout! Of course I'll have to have a cocktail or two after I set up camp. This is a sweet little f-150, about as stock as they come, I'll post pictures as soon as I figure out how to work the gallery thing. Thanks everybody for your advice, it's time to dust off the manual and do this stuff myself.
