engine problems
has any one found, a stainless steel tube, wich was found in the oil pan during a oil change. Dealership says it is a engine cooling tube for one of the cylinders. It is about 3 to 4 inches long. u shaped. has a taper at one end. and brazing coloration at the other. The head mechanic says there is no way that should fall out. While he was holding it in his hand. lol he says it might mean an engine replacement. anyone out there experience same problem?. Guys that did oil change, said that was the second time he had found one from the 7.3 diesel. My truck is a f250 super duty, 2003. Running great up till now

It is part of the lubrication system that cools and lubes one of the cylinders. obviously that particular cylinder could suffer abnormal wear and heat. also the tube was all dinged up from other moving parts, which could mean some damage to other engine parts. The mechanic said they might have to replace engine....but he said it was the first time that had ever happened. he has been a ford mech, for over 27 years.

I'm guessing you're under warranty, so take it to Ford and make sure you get satisfaction. Anything falling of in your oil pan is not acceptable. I think I agree with the engine replacement on this one. There's no telling how much damage could have been done without completely tearing apart the engine.

Piston cooler is vital if it falls off it can very well gall a cylinder.......well it happens in the bigger diesels any way so I would assume it could in these "little" ones too!! 
I think I would ask alot more questions !! Had trouble with a dealer(over an engine) and had to get one of the Zone people involved

sebeebe, What's the production date of your engine and your mileage? Can't help but wonder if there was a production problem and there are more out there with the same defect. I guess next oil change I'll be probing around inside the oil pan.

Hey Sled....can you tell me more about the zone people. The service people told me that ford told them, that there are 4 engines they know about so far. I dont know anything about the Zone people. Thanks for any help you can give.....Sebeebe

Sebeebe, Call the dealership they have to give that # out if asked for it!Give yourself some time when you start calling it may take some patience but hang in there I kept my kool and thats not easy for me

I'd say Navistar will be buying an engine on that one. I can't for the life of me figure out how something like that would come out of a drain hole though? How did it fit through the hole? There might be several of those laying in oil pans that never make it out the hole. I'd be a griping though.

Sebeebe the "zone" people that 7.3sled mentioned are Fords regional maintenance reps. They are the next step up the chain if your local dealer can't satisfactorily address your problem. I agree with Sled, get the number and call them, there is no reason your truck should be sitting at a dealer with no work being done when you are still under warranty. Like Sled said be patient but persistant, the sqeaky wheel always gets the oil as they say. The only time I had to deal with them was on a tranny failure in my old 97 PSD, it took a month but I never let them forget about me, sometimes calling everyday for a week straight, and it was finally resolved to my satisfaction at no cost to me. The regional reps also have to approve warranty repairs in some instances so the dealer may have already contacted them, and they may already be aware of your problem.
