Bad voltage regulator?

I have a 72 Ranger XLT. It runs great with new motor but my headlights, dashlights flicker at idle. Is this normal? When I got the truck, a wire coming out of the voltage regulator was totally fried. I replaced regulator and wiring but now I'm wondering if it's hooked up right. I was reading a thread about the Pertronix Flamethrower ignition systems which I installed and it talked about running the power to it from the backside of the ignition switch if the coil was being fed less than 12 volts. The thread stated that many only got between 6 and 8 volts. I rewired it to the ignition. No problems there but I did test the voltage going to the coil and it's only 4.5 volts. Is this a problem? Truck runs awesome but I would think the low voltage has got to be tough on the coil. Is my regulator problem connected to the low voltage to the coil. Real question is: does anyone know what wires go where from the voltage regulator? Sorry for being long-winded.
Thanks guys!
