anybody have any ideas for a down and dirty way to test a fuel pump. it is on a '73 f250 w/460.
i get up to high rpm's after the 1-2 shift, and it acts like it runs out of gas, and if i stop the truck right away, it wants to die, but give it a second and it seems like it catches back up to itself. i suspect a weak fuel pump, but want to test it first, before having to order it.
There are two things to check: 1st you need to plumb in a pressure gage into the fuel line and see what reading you get with the engine running; 2nd you check the flow by timing the output into a calibrated container and see what that number is. Not sure about a 460 specs, but probably if you are showing at least 4 psi and "reasonable" quantity, the fuel pump is ok. I'd sure be looking at any inline filters, and especially the microscreen filter(s) at the inlet to the carb before I bothered with trying to test the pump. Steve
well, it has a new fuel filter inline, and an edelbrock 1407 that is working correctly, and it is clean, so i am pretty sure that the problem is either the pump or something in the tank, just wanted to test the pump first
