That truck came out of the factory with a C5 automatic, and a 3.08 geared 3750 GAWR Ford 8.8 rear end.
That's the first time I've seen anythng other than an 82-83 with a 3.8 V6 with a C5...

Is that good or bad? What was the other alternative to the C5?

The C-5 is really an oddball. It's ok if you don't abuse it, but the C-6 is the best choice if you want to put some power through it. The downside is that a built-up C-6 can cost you some serious $$. The next best would be a C-4 tranny. They're good tranny's and you can find them pretty cheap and make them handle some HP as well.
