worn '53 lower shock studs

The lower front shock studs on my '53 F100 are on a plate that was sandwiched between the axle and the springs. The stud is badly worn and Dennis Carpenter doesn't have any and doesn't think that anyone else does either. Their suggestion was to cut off the old stud and weld a Grade 8 bolt cut the the right length into that place.

Sound right?

I have done the welded bolt onto a couple of jeeps where the stud broke off the attachment to the frame. A good arc welded stud worked for as long as I owned both jeeps.

Just a thought: If you are going to weld the bolt, don't bother with the cost of a grade 8. Once you heat it to weld it, it ain't that temper anymore. You can water quench the hot steel after welding and restore some of the temper.
