I must begin again by saying how sorry I am about not following my tow stuff up more frequently. With this kind of time on the road, I ought to get a satellite uplink or something fast. Here's the latest with my 04 F350 CC 4x4 FX4 6.0 PSDTorqshift:

I made another trip from Berwyn to Wickenburg. This time we hauled out a lighter load, a 1972 Ford Maverick. Otherwise, I am still using the Exiss trailer. The entire rig would have weighed in at around 15000 lbs. To recap, this is a February 2004 motor.

Since I wasn't trailering an SUV for a change, the aerodynamics were much better and the weight a bit lighter, so fuel mileage was higher. I'll post all my log data below in a separate post as usual. The truck was taken from 10757 miles up to 13192 miles. We made the trip in just over two days (team operation of course!).

I did encounter one problem on this trip. After the descent out of Flagstasff, I developed a surge under lower load conditions (flat areas). It kind of reminded me of an EGR surge with a Gas Engine. I didn't experience any reduced power or anything like that, though, and I had all eight running, so I drove it home to Wickenburg and dumped the oil as usual. Next morning, I fired it up and it was still acting up. I drove it a bit more and varied engine speeds a lot, and after about ten miles it was fine. Since then I have driven it 300 miles and all's well. I have mostly experience with gas engines, but it sure felt like a piece of carbon in the EGR valve. I suppose I might have got an air bubble in a lifter or an injector as well. No matter, though, as it is all worked out now. Overall, I am very pleased with the economy of the engine as well as the power. I have basically beaten the snot out of the motor for 13000 miles with two minor hickups I fixed myself. I always keep the oil clean, though.

Hi Cowboy, If I understand your post right Your getting 13-18MPG while pulling 15,000lbs???? Highway I'm sure but thats fantastic mileage. I just completed a 2,400 mile run in three days pulling 7-8K and averaged just over 11MPG. 16-18 maybe 19 on a good day is my unladen highway mileage. Here the rest of the data over the past 11 months. Anything under 11 mpg was towing the trailer. Other than that, 75% of my driving is to work and back and short trips around town. My work and back trip is 4 miles each way and includes a hill with an 8%+ grade.

When doing pure highway driving I usually see the lie-o-meter averaging 17 to 19 mpg, but frequently don't get around to filling up the truck until after the city driving has knocked the average back down.

Other notes, I added the SCMT on 5/23/04 and did a couple tanks on Hi perf, before going to the econo tune for six tanks, then three tanks on tow safe to drag the trailer around, then finally back to hi perf and off to the drag strip.

It should be noted that the SCMT improved the towing mileage greatly.
