I previously owned a 4.6L that broke the back exhaust manifold studs. After checking around I learned this is a common problem with the 4.6L as well as the 5.4L. They seem to hint there is an improved stud(stainless or so). Now I own an F250 with the 6.8L and am wondering if these also have that problem and is there anything I can do to prevent this, for instance change out to a better/stronger stud or go with the old "if it aint broke don't fix it" way of thinking. I've learned this is a very expensive fix once it breaks.
I've replaced lots of studs on 5.4s, some on 4.6s and none on 6.8s.
I'm not sure why this is but they dont seem to break on the V10, at least where I live they dont.
If it was mine I'd leave it until they had to be done. Usually the studs break in such a way that they aren't really hard to remove. It's a fair bit of work to remove the inner fender liner and manifold to get at the studs but it's not all that bad.
installed headers and found 2 broken bolts plus broke 1 myself. I could get a drill to them so i just used an easy out. the borla headers came with a set of stage 8 locking bolts. nice set of hardware made for the v10. the package for the bolts were seperate so maybe you could buy them directly.
id only replace any that are already broke. if you break one by the motor mounts you'd definitley wish you didnt!
