I am looking to swap cams in my 390 but was wondering if i should be the motor or take apart the front of the truck. I need to look at the truck better to see if it can be done. And do you think i can pull the cam out with the cam gear or not? I pulled an old cam out of a 351c and didn't care but it really did a number to the bearings.
As for getting cam out...just pull the radiator and or condensor(if equipped) and the cam should come out without pullling the motor. I did this on a small block. Should not be that different for big block.
Using the cam gear to hold the cam will work, you just need to be very careful when pulling on it. Do it carefully and do not just jerk the cam out. Easily pull til it hits the next bearing and then slowly get it thru, do this till it's out. Sometimes a long bolt screwed in will work better as a handle, but then it may get in the way as you get the cam out of the motor and it gets caught in the grille. By then you could unscrew bolt and just handle the cam out.
thanks freightrain!
But the problem is the big block is longer than the small block and therefore the cam is longer too. so i don't know about getting past the middle frame behind the grille. Its smack in the middle and the same with the cam location i believe. Time to torch i guess.
I just did the swap in a 70 and there is plenty of room if you remove the radiator.
I had to remove the support bar (2 bolts) that goes straight down behind the grill.
Good Luck.
