OK I'm driving down the road and the service engine light comes on. Drove a little farther and pulled off the highway. Truck stalled. Started it up and a lot of black smoke came out of it. This is a 93 explorer with 140,000 miles on it. Made it home and put the code checker on it came up with 176 and 177 left o2. So I put that in and took it for a ride. Well the light came on again the code said 173 Right o2. So I put that one in. All this time I had a real smelly exhaust PU. Now the light still comes on and it is sucking gas like it was going out of style!? So what is wrong with this thing I still have the 173 code?
Thanks Bob
It sounds as if you either have some unmetered air entering the engine or a fuel pressure problem . Check for any intake leaks or the tube that runs from the air filter housing to the throttle body . Have the fuel pressure checked , It should be 35 to 45 Psi .
In addition to Paul's suggestion, I would also try cleaning the MAF. And don't forget to reset the computer after you are done. The computer should be reset any time that you replace a sensor or fix a problem.
If the fuel pressure is high, check to make sure the vacuum line is still connected to the fuel pressure regulator before you run out and buy one. If there's gas coming out of the vacuum line, it's an indication that the regulator is gone.
