I've never had this problem before, it's always been hot starts with other vehicles. My truck just started it today, but it's doing it all the time that I let the engine cool off though. I have no idea where to start with this? I'm planning on swapping to a 2bbl carb (with adapter plate) on stock intake. It's like the carb isn't giving fuel, I have to use starting spray. When it starts, it'll run just like it should and start up again if it dies (as long as it warmed up). Would a new carb fix it?
On another note, the truck runs very rough at idle and dies occasionally, especially after it's just started. I'm pretty sure the choke is working because I had the air cleaner off to see it and it was closed when cold then opened up as the engine warmed.
I would have said the choke, but you said you checked it. Now I say a general carb rebuild. I had this problem. I think it was from air getting in around the seals and ruining my mixture. I did a rebuild, and now it starts better than EFI! I barely crank half a turn and it is running. It would need full throttle when warm to start, idled terrible, occasionally died, and got horrible mileage. I rebuilt it and now it is fine. As a side note, check to make sure you don't have any leaks at the carb to manifold mating surface or from the manifold to head. This could mess with mixture and cause problems. Good luck, Ted
That sounds exactly like what mine's doing. Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to put an adapter on and put on a Holley 350cfm 2bbl. I like the Holley's better and I know how to tune them. I know Clifford has an adapter for $58, but I read somewhere that there's another one for around $20... I just can't find it again.
