286 mile run yesterday took 13.9gals of fuel. Stuffed at the same pump in the same position. That 20.5mpg. 5.4 Lariat with 3.73LS gears. Of course it's flat ground and only about 30 miles of that wasn't highway.. I don't see how it's possible, but it's doing it. Just crossed the 1000 mile yard line yesterday. Compared to that OPEC built Bronco(10-11mpg) I still have the 04' will damn near pay for itself with the fuel I don't burn..
Here's another thing the oil in the engine is still so clear you can barely see it on the stick.. Also the inside of the exhaust pipe still looks like the engine has never been started.. Perfectly clean..
Excellent mpg numbers. I wish mine would get that. I'm getting about 13 - 14 mpg. It's made me want to get a beater that gets better mileage, but that will have to wait until after my wedding.
I have just over 13,000 miles on my truck and the inside of the exhaust tip is very black and even on the outside edges. I wonder if yours will be the same when you get more mileage on the truck. Time will tell...
I took my truck for two different 500 mile trips in the past two weeks. The truck got 19.? MPG on both trips. These were mostly highway miles. Now on the other side, back at home now and around town getting about 15.? MPG. I now have about 2500 miles on the truck, I will watch to see if I get any better as the truck breaks in further.
Now I'm talking the Garden State Parkway in NJ. Flat as pool table, but lots of toll booths to slow down for then get going again. Even around town breaking the engine in with hard acceleration the worst I've seen is 15 mpg. I even ran it through the gears flat on the floor a few times coming out of those toll booths, well up to 75mph anyway..
Sully, something's not right with your truck. Is safe to say you had it back to the dealer??
Mine's going back for the AC and molding around the sunroof, but that's it. The truck was built 06/02/04 in Norfolk. I want the oil changed at 1500 and the rear axle lube and that will be next week.
I've got a 5.4 Lariat with 250+ miles on it and my computer reads 11.4 mpg. I only live about 2 miles from work and it's all lights, but 11.4 mpg seems absurd (especially considering the mpg claims made above). This is only the computer reading and I haven't checked it myself as I haven't filled up yet, but has anyone else had this problem? Could the computer possibly be right?
When I read this in the manual, I was like what the deuce? Why is it recommended to do this? I got 18mpg in the city the one time I filled up twice and the same pump in the same position. My milage was 509 the first time I filled up at this gas station then 852 the next time and filled up with 19.3 gallons... all my other fill ups have been averaging 12-14mpg.
Spart, have you tried hitting the "reset" button on your dash when the "MPG" reading is showing?? Try hitting it when you are rolling down a hill with you foot off the gas.. I've seen 85mpg so far... Remember this is just and average of what you are doing from when you hit the reset button..
MX, I've never read this statement in the manual... It's common sense to have the vehicle in the same position to refill the fuel tank. The fuel tanks on these 04's are on the driver's side..after that I haven't been under the truck to see if the fill hose feeds the front or the rear of the tank. If it feeds the front then filling with the front of the truck up a hill(in gas stations built like that) you'll be able to put more fuel in the tank.. Side to side positions can effect this also..
Before the trip fill the tank at your favorite gas station. Get out of the truck and in real plain slow english explain to the rag you want to top the truck off yourself to check the mileage.. He won't understand, but try your best... (Sorry NJ doesn't have self serve) Make your trip, if you buy fuel on the trip just record how many gallons, but the bottom line if filling back up at the same station you filled at first..
drove mine (sc fx4 285-70-17 bfg's) across country, most of the time around 80mph, for the trip I got 13.9. She now has 8600 miles. Driving around here I get 15.5 to 16 mpg
Dunk, so you're saying it's just to get an accurate mpg reading? I've never heard anyone ever mention that. Maybe cause I haven't had too many talks with people about mpg's but it makes sense.
Btw, the stuff from the manual is on page 247... I extracted the following from the manual
MX, that link doesn't work.. I didn't equate common sense to what I was saying about the fuel computer. The common sense thing was about having the truck in same position to fuel it..before and after your trip.. Read your manual. It explains that it takes 500 miles from when you hit the reset button on the MPG "est" for it to really settle down. They also tell you you can hit the reset button after you are on the highway to check your mileage. Hit the reset button while you are driving a few times.. You'll see what I'm saying..
Dunk, yeah I know what you ment about the common sense thing, it came out wrong (I even edit my post) oops... Also, the link should work now, check it out. Another thing, my truck doesnt have a computer. I just have a pen and paper, hehe.
