Hello,
I have had the same problem with my 98 Explorer 4x4 4.0 SOHC since new. When RPM's reach 2600 or above (even on light acceleration) the engine will ping loudly. It used to only happen for the first 15 minutes or until the vehicle was "warmed up". then it would go away and I would notice a power increase. Now it never goes away no matter how far I drive. The check engine light has never come on. Is there any way to change the engine timing or enhance it. Resetting the computer has no effect. I have tried different gas a still no change. Where should I take this?
The wires inside the Mass Air Flow Sensor is likely the problem . The collect a thin layer of dirt . Get some electrical parts cleaner , remove the sensor & use the cleaner on the wires , just be careful , thats something that if you break it , you will have to buy a whole new sensor .
I would suspect a faulty ECT, engine coolent temp sensor. This controls the cold engine spark advance. If your pinging, then the timing is retarded and the computer thinks the engine is cold.
Check with the Ford Dealership. There is a recall going on involving the timing tensioners and affect 97-present models. My engine was blown, and when I ask the service manager if there was any relationship to the timing tensioner- he replied that the only problem was "noise"! Since then I have learned that if the tensioner snaps the timing chain will break and there goes the engine!
