Hey all im new here just stumbled across the site, tons of useful info.
but i have got a question for all you ford gurus out there, i have a 78 ford with the 351m in it and it just stopped running, it would start up and run fine for about 2 mins and then just die so i figured it was the ignition moduel so i got it tested, tested good still no difference.
i have tried everything that i could think of with no luck.
New parts:
coil, rotor and cap, plugs and wires, 3 different ignition moduels, electric fuel pump(the mechanical one crapped out, bought a new one and it still didn't work, something about the cam being worn)
if anyone has any ideas or things to try please let me know
i understand that you have a new electric pump, have you verified that gas actually comes out of the line to the carb? for longer than the two minutes you say it runs fine for before it dies? the sock on the end of the pick-up tube in the tank could be clogged or collapsing. there could be something floating around in the tank that gets sucked to the sock. personally, i can't imagine the fuel pump eccentric wearing out in a constant oil deluge.
Im suprised no one has mentioned to change your fuel filter yet..or have they, and im just missing it? Sometimes with fuel filters, it will run fine at first, but then after it has been running, debris from within the line blocks the filter off, you let it sit, it falls again, and it runs fine, try a new filter, and since you have an electric pump, turn it on without a filter, clean the line by flushing the fuel currently in the line into a can, and then install the filter, and hopefully it will fire right on up for you and stay running, you have done alot to narrow down the spark side of things...time to take care of the fuel side.

I have had the cam break in my 79 -f150 4x4 the last 4 lobes, so it was only running on 6 cyl. I still managed to tow it 70 miles from deer hunting last fall pulling a 25 ft trailer, now THATS FORD TOUGH ! So pop off a valve cover and crank it, make sure all the rockers are moving !
I tested the ignition module on my 79 because of an intermittant problem and then went on to checking other things when it tested fine. I work for Autozone so I trust our testers, they're pretty good but not 100% foolproof though so I kept the module in the back of my mind. After checking and eliminating other possible causes I went ahead and bought a new module anyway. They're only $20 so it was a cheap way to find out if that was my problem. Well, that fixed the problem I was having, which was periodic. So my advice is to go buy a new module anyway, it may not fix your truck, if it doesn't you now have a spare, but it may fix it too.
