Bizzare....my 69 has learned a new trick...it just shuts down. It has happend a few times now. I can be running down the road at high speed or slow through town and I will loose all electrical...well I can't really say that because I do believe the lights still work. I believe everthing controled by the ignition goes flat. The first few times it happened I actually had to stop, put the tranny in park and crank and it fired right up. The last two times, it has gone dead for a couple seconds ( i was on 4 lane running 70 ) then kicks back on like there was nothing wrong. The funny part is the back fire through the exhaust when that happened. Scared the Hell right out of my wife. Any clues?
The backfire thru the exhaust is typical if the ignition is shut off and turned back on again while the engine is still running. Is your ignition all stock? Maybe a flakey ignition switch?
Check your plug on the back of the switch. Mine had come loose and did the same thing. Other times it shut down and would not run at all.
The switch itself my be faulty also.
The motor will continue to "fill" with fuel since the motor is still turning and creating vacuum. Since there is no spark it will just blow it out the exhaust. Once you get spark....BOOM!!!...it will finally ignite what is just floating around. Including what is in the exhaust pipe. This will usually balloon any "older" muffler and then rendering it useless or shall we say "less quiet"
