2000 Explorer Sport Info Needed
Guys,
I'm new to this board and Explorers in general. Granted, I've seen thousands of them on the streets, but I've always been a pickup truck man. I am a Ford fan, though. I've been driving a 1988 Ford F-250 diesel since 88 and I'm in the market for a SUV now. I've come across a 2000 Explorer Sport 4x4, with 20,400 miles, with all of the bells and whistles at a local Volvo dealer. Asking price was $19,999 and I have them at $17,500 right now. Basically, I'm looking for opinions and info. If anyone has one of these, or has knowledge of them, I'd love some input. Problem areas and what to look out for when buying would be very helpful. If there are any parts which tend to fail early or easily, please post here. This vehicle has a 5-speed automatic transmission. How long have these been around and how do they hold up? How are the 4-wheel drive systems (transfer cases, hubs, etc.)? Anything that anyone can contribute will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Elevatorguy

I bought my 91 4x4 xlt 5 spd manual with 120k miles on it. The seller told me the 4x4 didn't work, but every time I try it, it works.
Now it has 172K and still going good. No problem with the 4x4, in fact, you hardly notice that it is there. But I don't do off-roading with it - only use it in wet or icy road conditons.
I am looking at a 99 sport, 5 speed manual, 4x4 which I think I can get for under $16K. Pretty much decided I like it. It will replace my wife's 96 Mustang GT, not my 91 explorer.
