I have a 77 f150 exp witha 400. The 400 will be traded for a 460 in a few months. But I must use the truck before that. so my problem is that the truck starts. But when you try to turn it off the kee turns but wont stop so you have to detatch the batery cable from the battery. Also for the transplant what year should I use.
Zack, I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago. It ended up being
the iginition switch. Shouldn't cost you but about 15 dollars. Most autoparts carry the basic ford indash switch.
As far as a 460 goes. I have a 78 model out of a Lincoln. You can probably find a running one in the 3 to $500 range. Mine had the newer model small sanginaw power steering box and the big Lincoln 100 amp alternator. If you get an older one, say 73 or back, it might be higher compression and have a little more grunt but, that will mean you have to run premium fuel all the time.
Some guys on the forum, I'm sure have installed newer EFI 460's, Maybe someone might respond about that. Whichever year motor you get, try to get all the pulleys and brackets with it. Sometimes, that can be pill to round all of them up and expensive if you have to buy new.
Try a new a switch. I think that will fix your truck for now. Good Luck
Your solenoid could be stuck closed also. Check to see if you have voltage at the S terminal of the solenoid when the key is in the RUN or OFF positions. It should only have voltage when in START. If it has voltage in RUN or OFF then the ignition switch is bad.
I've had this exact problem (truck won't turn off) on my '74 F250. The problem was a bad ground on the starter solenoid. Just take out the mounting screws, wire brush them and the holes, and re-assemble. It should solve the problem. If not, the replace the solenoid (probably only $15, and if still no luck, then replace the key-switch).
