I don't quite get your question, but I'll guess.
The tanks are separate. There's a switch on the dash to switch the guage to read one or the other. This switch also switches on and off the fuel pumps.
Therefore is you want to use, say, the front tank, turn the switch to the front one and only put gas in the front tank. Ignore the rear one.
It can be that when you fill up one tank that fuel will migrate over to the other one. This is a malfunction and there have been several posts about this happening and how to fix the problem.
If thats whats happening the fuel selector valve is bad. Go to the SEARCH option at the top of this page and type in selector valve then go down to Dual fuel tankS by mike L 8-8-2004. If you cant find it write back. Replacement part at Ford for 56.00 ask for net price, call more then one dealer they quote different prices. Very hard to find after market part that's a direct applacation fit. Hope this helps.

Just got the truck a few months ago and just going thru it and taking off things I dont want on it.Going to take the front tank off and just use the rear and wanted to know if someone has some ideas. Thanks for getting back. Tony
I'm not sure why you would want to, it's not like these trucks get 30 yet alone 20 MPG. Just to warn you, your going to be a very frequent customer at your local gas station if you carry this one out.
I have an 1987 f150 with 4.9 runs reg. gas, 140,000. I blocked off the two top ports at the fuel tank selector valve. The two top ports are for the front tank. The drivers side is the 5/16" fuel supply port and the pass. side is the 3/8" return port. Get two pieces of 2" inch fuel lines one 5/16" and one 3/8"and 4 hose clamps and two bolts that fit in each hose. Don't forget to run the front tank low before removing, it heavy. Also unplug the fuel pump inertia switch located on the firewall left of the brake pedal and run until it stalls it relieve the fuel pressure.

This truck is only going to be a play toy, maybe I`ll put a 1000 miles on it.I`ve got a car to drive everyday that gets 37+ miles to the gal.I also have 78 bronco to play with. The 87 250 4x4 with a 4sp might be setup for mud bogging. Thanks for the input.Tony

Thanks, mike L for helping me locate the fuel pump inertia switch on my 1988 4.9 F150 (longbed, front 19 gal. driver's side and rear 18 "gallonish" steel tanks) that suddenly quit starting (has good spark).
Now, hope someone can also help me find the location(s?) of the fuel tank selector valve AND the high pressure pump!!

Driver's side frame rail. Follow the lines forward from the tanks and you'll find a black plastic can with four connections on one side and two on the other, that's the selector valve. Follow the two lines forward and one of them goes into the high pressure pump.
these trucks have the stupidist tank design in the world, 2 electric pumps then anther high pressure pump on frame rail, at least my 75 just had one pump on the engine for all 4 tanks, and was simple and reliable. this efi garbage must have been a huge embarassment to ford from these years either that or they just wanted to sell even more parts per truck.
