i just got my rebuilt 360 made into a 390 hooked up, tonight i started it for the first time. after a few minutes i had white smoke coming out my drivers side exhaust again. i am perplexed, this engine was complety gone thru top to bottem. the only thing i can think of is there is a crack they missed when they checked the block, is this possible ? or could it be the heads, i developed white smoke before the rebuild when i put these new heads on, but only on the drivers side, when it was rebuilt they put the heads on oppsite sides, if it was the heads wouldnt the steam be coming out of the passenger side now ? like i siad i am lost
It could be a few things. It could be that you have a head gasket not sealing, or it could be the intake manifold gaskets. They could have been bad before the rebuild and not seated completely after the rebuild. Did your machine shop check for cracks in the block and heads?
yeah they checked everything, and it has all new gaskets everywhere. i called the owner of the shop tonight when i got home, he says he thinks it is just left over water in the muffler from before the rebuild. i disagreed, he is going to meet with me at my garage wendesday afternoon to see what it is doing. 10-1 i gotta pull the motor again. jeeze
this is what it did tonight, i first started it and after a few minutes i noticed a little steam coming out the overflow, so i shut it off, also at this time i saw the white smoke starting. all it did was idle, no reving no nothing, i checked the rad and it was low on water, i had just put in 2 1/2 gallons of anifrezze yesterday after i got the rad hooked up. so i starting adding water, took close to 3 gallons ( how much does a 3core hold anyway ? ) after checking the oil again i restarted it, and after 2 minutes i had thick white smoke out the drivers side pipe. ran for about 3 minutes but the smoke never stopped, so i shut it down. thats the facts and nothing but the facts and it is undisputed.
If water is entering in like it sounds, have you tried pulling your spark plugs on the drivers side ? Shouldn 't one or more show in some way if water is entering in the combustion chamber? compare to other bank of plugs wouldn't hurt either.
UPDATE !
the white smoke was just water trapped in the muffler. some from when the gasket blew and some from when the tarp covering the front of the truck blew away, i didnt get home for three days so i didnt know. she is running strong now, no smoke . i took it for a 5 mile drive and wow she is running good, gotta get the hood back on and the rest of the stuff and she ready to go
I had a simular thing happen with a 81 chevy .It came out the dual pipe .All checked out right so I drove it to the machine shop for him to check it out. well at the stop sign just before the shop I looked to my left to see a tent revival meeting in full swing. then I noticed the wind at my passengers side blowing all the smoke and totaly ecasing the tent ,people and all. i felt so bad ,then burst out in tears of laughter. That was bad ! It was discovered to be the trans modulator . I have since repented my ways.
