With the key on the fuel guage should peg to one side, indicating the wiring and guage are good. The most common problems are bad ground to frame, broken wiring or corroded connections. Check wires, clean connections and ground (use dielectric grease).

if you have to pull the sending unit out check the copper looking float for holes. my guage stopped working the same way and the float had gotten a hole in it and sank to the bottom. i bought a new one from my local dealer for $5.00. hope something here helps you.
