Heater Problem....

My 2000 F-250 7.3 Diesel Super Duty truck heater will put out heat even when I have the vent switch to outside air and it's cool outside.

Anyone know what might be happening? I was once told there is some sort of device that cuts off the heater on hard pulls or hauls, but can't find any info on it now.

Thanks in advance for your help.

There is no provision on a Superduty to cut the coolant flow from the heater core, so the coolest your vent will ever be is about the same temp as the radiator. I don't believe you are having a malfunction.

You can cool off the vent, and the a/c by installing a shutoff valve in the heater core line.

Are you able to control the temperature in the other modes or do you have heat all the time?

I have the same problem even with the heater core shut off valve installed and closed. It's especially warm after sitting in the hot sun for an hour after a long drive. I've tried running the vent for up to 5 minutes with no sign of it cooling off. I have the coolant flow stopped via a manual valve under the hood. I have no idea why it blows so warm for so long other than the housing is just warm from engine heat. I just end up turning on the AC or turning the controls to off and opening the windows.

Here's the fix when it is on Max A/C.

I know of another link where a PSD owner used a Ford Ranger valve and controlled the opening and closing with a switch in the cab.

I have something similar to that already installed and mine will still blow heat for a long time. As in for up to 5 minutes before I give up and turn on the AC or just shut it off and open the windows.

I usually turn on the a/c for awhile to cool down the ducts, then switch to vent.

I should have mentioned that I can turn on the A/C and it will cool down, but if I go back to vent, after it cools down the ducts, it will still go to some heat, rather than the cool air outside.

If it's 50 degrees outside and I get heat from the vents, I can go to A/C and cool off the vents, switch back to vent and get the warm/hot air again. This is an intermittant problem.

Thanks for your response.

Don't forget that the air inlet and some ducting for the ventilation system are right next to exhaust components (namely, the passenger exhaust header and turbo). May not be much you can do except use the A/C a little more. Heck, you're already paying the gas tab for the rig, what's a little more!?!?

Sounds like the blend door isn't closing all the way. Ford uses an electronic blend door motor to control the temperature. Although rare, they can malfunction.

Try either bypassing the heater core or install a valve in one of the heater hoses and close it. If it stops blowing hot air from the vents, it's the blend door not closing all the way.

I was going to install shutoff valve from home depot in one of the heater hoses, does it matter which one? Mine gets very hot in cab even with control off the glove box is like an oven!!

Does it matter what type material valve is made of, copper, gal steel?? Will it affect SCA/ PH levels?

You might want to check with a auto parts store. They may have a manual universal water valve. They are usually made of brass and are flared to hold the hose on.
