timing.

on another note, the truck is surging thru all gears. i was told to check the timing, o2 sensor, the catalitic converter, and spark plugs. so yeah how do i change the o2 sensor?

You need to pull the spout connector, plug at the end of a wire near the distributor. Make sure the idle speed is correct, connect the pickup wire to #1, connect battery connections, mark the pointer with whiteout, make sure all is clear, start engine and test.
I would start by test fuel pressure and checking for codes, see the links in the tech info thread on these topics.
O2 is threaded into the down pipe on the passengers side, on top.
