I used to have a cycle dyno. The problem is not the machine, it is the noise. If you live near anybody at all, they will go nuts. You would not believe how loud a cycle can be. Even with a muffler it's bad. I don't know how you can keep a car or truck quiet enough. It's alot of fun, and can be very useful if you race. Also the other problem is: you buy the dyno and all your friends want to use it for free. It is probably cheaper in the long run to rent time on somebody elses. Good luck with it.
Don't think I'd put one in my shop, due to the reasons stated above. my neighboors put up with enough from my own vehicles!
I've been thinking about building a Dyno shop. I'd like to build one with a 4 wheel chassis dyno, to accomodate the hopped up Diesel 4x4s and the AWD ricer craze (Eclipse, WRX, Lancer EVO etc). the AWD Dyno machine runs that I looked at runs about $100,000. But I figured could break even at about 3 Dynos per day, 5 days a week. I'm still thinking about it!
Noise is a consideration, but my shop is at the back of the lot, about 300 feet from the closest neighboring house. Couple that with the construction characteristics and exhaust outlet system and I think I’ll be ok. I guess I’ll ask the kid down the street to bring his grunge metal band over to practice in the shop around 2 am and we'll see if the cops show up
