I've got my old tank out of my 79 F-150 and am getting a new one tomorrow. The inside of the old gas tank was pretty nasty, and I'm wondering if there is a way to replace the little cylindrical filter that hangs down toward the float? I tried very gently to move it by hand, but didn't want to destroy it in case it doesn't actually come off as a separate piece. So if it comes off, how do I get it off, and how hard is it to come by a replacement filter? Thanks.
I posted that same question a long time ago. There might be some useable info on that thread if you do a search on this forum. I never found a replacement. I would recommend taking it off since it's probably full of 20+ years of crud and dirt particles. I put in two inline aftermarket(Purolator) fuel filters with replaceable filter elements. One is just after the tank in the frame rail and one after the fuel pump. Those are in addition to the incarb fuel filter. If that intank filter ever clogs up you'll be kicking yourself down the road for not removing or replacing that filter when you had the tank dropped. It's not much fun to drain and drop those tanks too often.
Thanks, Cigar. I did a search and found one reference to this filter, but the rare nature of threads about this and the dearth of answers to my question here leads me to believe nobody around town is going to have anything for me. Since the radiator shop ordered the wrong tank for me on the first try, I've had 'er up on blocks for a week now and have to get it moving. I did spray the heck out of it with carb cleaner, hopefully that will make at least a little difference. Plus I'm an old hand at pulling the tank now, since I've had to remove 2 of them in the last week...
I just had my pickup screen off to make a new tube to go to the bottom of my larger gas tank. (previous owner had installed a deeper 39 gallon tank and extended the tube with 2 pieces of ruber hose, 4 clamps, and a piece of copper tubing). It just slides on, just kind of a "force-fit". I twisted it gently just by the top and worked it off. I didn't see anything really to go wrong with it if you can clean the screen material, it's empty inside.
ford still sells this filter it comes in to sizes 5/16 and 3/8 if I remember right the last one I bought was 15.00. Just pull the old one off and put the new one on. Rory
Your friendy ford dealer has the tank pickup screen for about $10.00
Apparently I'm BLIND! I never even saw this post yesterday when I had the tank out... Well, at least I cleaned it up a little. Thanks for the info (and the one from Rory), I'll know better next time.
