There are many threads on oil,, do a search and plan to spend a day reading,, Both oils you listed are very good,,, I run the Rotella in my 04 psd and have been happy. Its kind of personal preference and what you truck likes the best,, as long as it meets the CI 4 specs... some folks have tried different oils and then settle on the one that makes the truck the happiest,, Just my $. 02,,,

no problem,, I have 13k on my 04 now since march and have been running the Rotella since 4k miles..I change it evey 4k,,, I pay $6.26 a gallon at Wall-Mart and $17 for the Factory Motorcraft Filter at a local parts store so it costs be about $42 ,, Yes it can get expensive if you try different oils unless you try them at each oil change and even more $$ if you go synthetic, Just make sure you don't over fill when adding oil,,,, The manual says 15 qts.. Mine took 14.5 last time and I've heard of some folks trucks taking anywhere from 13-15 qts.. I keep mine below the MAX on the dip stick and truck is happy..

There has been discussion about Ford recommending the 10W30 for the 6.0... A service writer at one of the Utah dealers specifically told me this and I believe it has been mentioned before at the FTE. I still ran the 15W40 Motorcraft simply because it is hot at the edge of the desert- Recently changed over to synthetic Mobil 1 5W40 for a variety of reasons... Plus the Moderator approved

I thought I could get it done cheaper than what the dealer told me they would do it for. ($72.00) Now that I am finding my way around the forums I am getting a lot of questions answered. Thanks for all the help and input.

it cost me $42 to do it myself,, less then 1/2 what the dealer charges,, with the filter up on top its a breeze,, no mess,, the only hassle is getting rid of 15gt's of oil,, I dump it back into my empty gallon containers and find garages who will take them,. if you dealer charges $72 is not bad. my dealer wanted $95 . Some dealers will allow you to supply your own oil and filter and only charge about $15-$20 labor if you don't want to do it yourself so you can still save alittle $$ by suppling your own parts,,ie,, oil + filter,,,

matt1751,

$42 sounds a lot better than $72. I did all my own changes w/ the F-150 and don't see why I can't w/ the PSD. Now I just have to get past the break-in, and decide on an oil. I also can't belive how responsive it is, I was not expecting a diesel to be this quick .

these trucks are fast,, I can't wait to do my exhaust and programmer but as far as oil changes are Piece of cake to change,,the filter is great,, no more oil spilling on a cross member or down the frame.. I bought a 36mm socket for the filter cap. What I usually do is open the drain, then open the filter cap. go have a beer or 2, come back and replace filter, gasket and tighten filter cap, Put drain plug back in(very important) and then start adding a gallon at at time,, once I get to around 13qt I check if any thing on dip stick. if so then I fire the engine up for about a minute , then let things set for another beer or 2 and then check dip stick again,, then add till I am just below the max line.. last time took 14.5qts.. we'll this is just my method,,,

think I am going to hold off on the programmer and exhaust for the first few months. I am looking to get the air filter switched out the samre time do the oil. I heard some where that those were $45 -$50 each time. I was thinking about poping for a K&N. Your thoughts.

I plan on keeping the factory one for now. Exhaust will be next step and then maybe a programmer as funds are available, Trying to limit what may affect my warranty. My local dealer said they would take care of me but I worry if away from home and something happens. Good luck with your new truck. I've had mine 5 months now and still have the same grin when driving it as day 1,,,,
