lots of good info. this site helped me make a decision. check the selection of gps units at costco.com. good prices and you can even take it back for a refund with a bullet hole in it, no questions asked. LOL
I have Magellan's Meridian Gold, it was a little hard to understand at first, but I got the whole unit figured out in a few hours. Now, I dont see how I ever went off road without one!
It also handled some NASTY cold weather, temps down to about 5 degrees in the daytime, and it did slow down just a touch ( the LCD screen ), but no other problems at all. Very rugged, and somewhat rain proof
How timely! Thanks for the info...I've been needing to get one..hopefully with the updating display. i've not been able to find one under a grand...I'll keep my fingers crossed...thanks guys.
check out geocaching.com, their message boards havealot of information on there
i have a garmin emap and i like it. find out if your freinds have any so you can upload any of there maps or split the cost of mapping software, gamins map cd's are about $90 and if you are going to load maps in you will need a memory card

Now there is some good advice! when I bought my Magellan, all my buddies
thought that I went all geeky/techie with them, and would have nothing to do with it, so I plinked down an extra 90 for the cd, and got a memory card for another 40.00, now, TWO of my budz did what you are suggesting, only the dummarsess bought a different brand!!
I have used all sorts of GPS units from chart plotters in my boat to numerous hand held units. These were used in conditions from off shore heat to hunting in the mountains.
By far the best out there is Garmin. Hands down. Customer support is unsuprassed.
I currently have a Garmin GPS Map 76. It has loadable maps - they can even be topo maps for your specific area. Change areas - load a different map.
I have a Garmin 12 Map XL and I absolutely love it, still working great after four + years. Unfortunately it is discontinued now, if I had to replace it I would consider the GPSMAP 76S or the GPSMAP 76CS. I would go with a Garmin again. Whatever you get make sure it is rated for outdoor use. Use Lithium batteries for cold temperatures. I also find it handy for calibrating speedometers, odometers and setting clock time. As for picking up satellites make sure it is a quality unit with at least 12 channels.

Hehe. Always looking to find the easy way, eh, Mil1ion? We'll see who gets to Arthur Ontario with the least amount of "lost" time. I will only use a map!
