How long is it safe to let an engine set on a engine stand after rebuilding it or buying a crate engine , before you need to tear it back apart to re-lube it? I know that engines can and have sat for years and then fired up, but what would be the recommended limit.
i dont know the limits, but my engine sat along with my truck for a year and a half.
its fine. just have to squirt some oil down the spark plug holes.(make sure the plugs are removed first!)
it also depends on where you live. here in vegas, it doesnt get cold enough to damage an engine, and its always dry.
if you live somewhere with temp. xtremes and rain, then make sure its inside and dry.
I just took an old York a/c compressor apart that that been outside for 10 years. The inside was spotless. If the engine had plenty of lube, you could go a long time in a mild climate.
Main thing to do if you are storing a fresh rebuild is to cover all openings with duct tape or something, so that the air doesn't flow in and out, bringing in water vapor and dirt. If you are real concerned, spin it over every so often to keep it from sticking, and as mentioned, keep a little oil in the cylinedr, or you can fill the up, but I personally don't recommend that, as there are still some cylinders that the valves will be open on.
as Fellro said its a good idea to oil the cylinders but dont overfill them....then spin the engine over a few times a week (thats what i do) just walk by and see it so you reach over and crank it a few turns....i just put 20w50 in the cyl and filled the pan with cheap discount auto oil (this olny works if its partially assembled) you have to have the oil pan on and pump has to be hooked up....then you can lube the engine using a drill and the oil pump shaft.
