i got a problem

ok i was drivin my truck (94 F-150 4x4 302 AT long bed) and i came up to a stop and the truck was runnin real ruff, so i look at the tailpipe and alot of white smoke was comin out, so it was burnin alot of coolant. i know i coulda blew a head gasket, but it happened right all of a sudden, and it ran very smooth before and didnt use any coolant. could it be the intake manifold is bad? if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions i would really appreciate it.

thanks

this is one of those things that is hard to diagnose because its all internal.
a friend of mine had a cracked block and if the car sat for a few days it would blow white smoke for 10 minutes, but it was just a drip so as long as you ran the car everyday, it was ok.(using the term loosely)
the reason i use this example is because to troubleshoot this problem you have to get an idea of your truck's habits.

Does it blow white smoke when starting cold?
does it get better or worse when it warms up?
has the kid or anyone borrowed the vehicle lately?(over revving, racing etc...)
what about the repair history?
how often have you been checking things before this happened?

smell the exhaust to confirm what it is, anti freeze smells strong and kind of sweet. oil just smells bad.
good luck and keep posting your finds.

Not sure how a bad intake could make white smoke. As far as I know, the coolant is not near an intake runner.

Most likely is a head gasket.

I thought there were coolant passages in the lower intake manifold itself? I know the water temperature gauge sender is screwed into the lower intake mani on my 351w...

You are correct. What I am saying is how can it transfer to the intake? A crack maybe, but it's not all that common. there would have to be a crack in the manifold where the coolant passes and it would have to be on the same wall as an intake runner.

If I remember correctly how the manifold mates to the head, the coolant passage is separate from the intake runners on each side of it. (FE's are different)

You might want to look and see if anti-freeze begins to drip out of the tailpipe, and look at it this way, if it is a head gasket, the intake has to come off anyway so if you take the intake off and find the problem your there, if not continue on down to the heads.
