Okay, I have an opprurinty to buy a mid-80's Ford F-350 with a disel. First I wanted to know the HP and Torqe output of this engine. Also, I wanted to know how I could get 300HP out of it and maybe around 500lbs? I am a wrenchhead and am willing and have fun doing work on trucks. I know banks makes a turbo for it. What would I need to do? Are these engine easy to work on? I know nothing of diesels Im just a FE freak.
You can realistically get 500ftlbs out of an IDI
But 300 hp will take a tone of work and thousands of dollars
To get 500 ftlbs you will need a turbo, intercooler, good 4" exhaust, mess with the timing and get it dialed in by a good shop and turn it up by one allen flat. You will probally need propane injection.
I don't even know where to start for 300 hp
open up the heads lower compression ratio so you can get 20 lbs of boost nitrus and water injection.
I think stock it is 175hp and 330 or 350ftlbs.
a lot of work and lots of money
i would love to see a high hp IDI and i would love to see and old ford diesel built up the 80's fords are my favorite.
But realistically might as well put a built Cummins 6bt 12V in it and make 450hp and 1600ftlbs for the same cost as it would take to build an IDI up to that power level. but if you got the money go for it i would love to see one.
DT.
Diesels figure different, Torque is their playground, horsepower isn't the major factor the way it is on the gassers. Diesels typically are used up by 3000 rpm, so all their power is low rpm. It depends on your intentions as to whether diesel is what you want to go to, as the maintenance is higher than a gas, but for pulling power, diesel is the only way to go. Simply opening up the exhaust from stock makes quite a difference on these motors.
