Steering Column Loose
Hi,
My 1995 Ford F150 seems to have a fairly loose steering wheel. It's not loose at the pivot point for the adjustable tilt on the steering wheel. That seems fine and solid. It's actually at the pivot point for the steering wheel itself. The play is up and down and is pretty noticable. It doesn't affect the steering itself, and doesn't have any excessive rattle or other problems. I'm a little hesitant to take off the steering wheel to check it out because of the air bag.
Also, recently I had problems w/ the steering making "crunchy" sounds and sort of sticking... like there was a broken peice of plastic or something in there. I sprayed lubricant and it seemed to have had stopped.
Any ideas?

There is a plastic/nylon bushing in the tilt mechanism. This bushing has been known to get brittle and break (crunching sound?). The steering wheel will then have a slight bit of play in it. The tilt mechanism will still work, but may be more difficult. Get a diagram of your steering column, to verify this bushing.
