Question Starting Problem

I have a 1978 F-250 4x4 351 2bbl that my fiance recovered after being stolen from her a year ago. I'm trying to get it in decent shape as it was badly neglected. It started and ran, but with excess white smoke and doesn't idle worth a darn. I noticed that someone installed an MSD 6A system for the ignition system. I figured I would be a good boy and change the spark plugs. So I bought some standard plugs, gapped them to .044, and installed them. I cranked the engine and it worked for a few seconds then died. I tried putting the old plugs (splitfires) back in and the engine still won't even turn over. I'm trying to figure out what I could have done wrong just changing out the plugs. Any suggestions?

The white smoke is WATER! If it smokes white after it is warmed up, you have water getting into the cylinders. You said the engine won't turn over. Do you mean it won't spin with the starter, or it won't fire up? If it won't spin, it sounds like there is water in at least one cylinder and it has hydrolocked the engine. Pull the plugs and spin the engine. I may shoot water out a plug hole. Good luck.
