I have a 94 F-150, 4x4, 5spd trans, 4.9L 6cyl. I bought a new clutch kit for my truck and I am getting ready to tackle this, I am very inclined when it comes to engine work , but as for trans work , I am clueless. How difficult am I looking at here? Any advice would br great.
Be sure you have an alignment tool for your clutch...having a transmission jack would be a great help as well. I've never done a 94 5spd but the ones i've done were simple. Remove the driveshaft from the transmission, take the shifter/linkage out, and remove the bolts and pull back the tranny. It will make it easier to work on if you have someone to help you hold the crankshaft while you loosen bolts. You should also get the flywheel resurfaced unless you are replacing it. I'm not sure on cost, but I know its not that bad. Good luck.
Just had my flywheel re-surfaced for under $30. Have it done even if it looks pretty good. Found that out the hard way once. Good call on the trans jack. Those integral bellhousing trannies are like dealing with an automatic. (Gone are the good old days of laying the tranny on your chest and strong-arming it in.) A good LONG extension and/or a u-joint are just the ticket for the bellhousing to block bolts too. I'd also recommend a set of racheting box ends for the upper crossmember bolts to make life easier, and drain the fluid before you start or you'll be draining it unintentionally out the tailshaft.
You'll have to disconnect the front driveshaft from the transfer case. If you rent a transmission jack you'll be able to remove the transmission and transfer case as a unit.
