Engine Ping

I recently purchased a 93 Explorer, while I enjoy driving it I have noticed something odd about it. While first started, and until it warms up, there's no engine ping noise. Once it's warmed up and generally in 3rd thru 5th gear I hear a pinging noise. At first I thought maybe I was using the wrong grade of gas, but added octane booster and changed to higher grade of fuel in addition a different station. Still the pinging is there. Since this is the EFI V6, and according to the Haynes manual I cant adjust the timing, seems strange to me, any sugestions??

Thanks, in advance.

Oh yeah, the explorer has V6 SOHC, 123K miles, manual 5spd, 2WD sport.

If you have a code scanner I would scan for codes. Maybe one of your sensors is not working like your Knock sensor. The scanner is only $30 dollars at Autozone. I would at least verify your timing setting with a timing light.

Checked the timing first thing, seemed ok..but the solution was found. I cleaned the MAF sensor, with some electical contact spray, changed the air filter while I was in there. Success !

No more pinging.

YOU PROBLEM IS LIKELY THE PLUGS, AND WIRES. CHECK HOW OLD YOUR PLUG WIRES ARE. COMMON PROBLEM WITH THEM, I JUST HAD TO PUT A SET ON MY TRUCK.

BY THE WAY, BE CAREFUL HOW YOU ROUTE THE WIRES. IF YOU GET THE WRONG ONES TOO CLOSE TOGETHER, THEY'LL CROSS FIRE, AND YOU'LL
BURN THE PISTONS OUT OF IT.

Just a note to anyone with this problem:
Cleaning the wires on your MAF sensor should be a periodic maintenance item on these engines, I've put 301,000 miles on 2 Explorers over the last ten years, and done this 2 or 3 times on each one. I keep fresh air filters in them, I guess a certain amount of oily dust is unavoidable. It takes about 20 mins. to do, just use a 'safe' electrical cleaner.
