I bought a 2000 ford ranger 3.0 ext cab on saturday it has 90k miles on it. on thursday afternoon i pulled into the drive way and smelt a burnt smell and looked at the front brakes and white smoke was coming from them. Not a lot of smoke but still from a truck i just bought that can't be good. any Suggestions will help

It sounds like the calibers might be frozen. Or Maybe the brake pad has worn down and your grinding metal.

Were the rotors hot?

I had a similar problem with mine. Ended up being the calipers. The rebuilt ones are not too expensive and worth the investment. Pull the rotors and inspect them for hot spots and check the bearings. If all is well there, it could be the master cylinder. What does the brake fluid look like in the master cyl?

I took it to the place where i had bought it and they replaced the calipers free of charge to me. But it still smokes. it is the front passenger brake. I will drive only about 2 miles and it will still do it.

Replace the rubber line that goes to the caliper. The fluid will go to caliper but will not return.

I heard from someone that it could be the proportioning valve. could that be correct?

I have to go along with the brake hose. Where ever they put a steel routing clamp
around the hose rust builds up between the wrap around the hose and restricts the
flow.

my old 89 pulled that this past weekend. it was the brake caliper. not to hard to replace. it took me about 15 min. autozone sells them for about 15 plus a core charge.

well the dealership replaced the calipers (front left/right) and it didn't fix it. today i took it back and the said "the wheel seals were leaking." well i took it home and by then they were smoking like they did before. so i am getting very angry!!!! i told them to check the rubber line that goes to the caliper. they said that wasn't the problem. By the way my warranty is at a dodge dealership.

Just because a part is new or rebuilt doesn't always guarantee that it's good. Did the dealer rebuild your calipers or did they exchange them for rebuilts? Out of curiosity, when the engine is running have you ever reached down with your hand or foot and made sure the brake pedal is fully up and not somehow partially down/applied?

At this point, I'm not convinced that it is the master cylinder or the proportioning valve. The reason for this is that if it were one of those items, both brakes on an axle would have problems. Do you have RABS or ABS on it?

Cool

No i have not tried with my hand to check that. i took it back to the dealer this morning and they didn't believe that it smokes, so they told me to drive it and prove to them that it does smokes. it was about 7:00 am so it was cooler and moist outside, so of course it didn't smoke. but they smelt the burning smell that i did, so they SAID they would look at it again. i am not sure if it has ABS or RABS.

I'm not super familiar with 4 wheel ABS, but I have to wonder if a failed component in the system could somehow be not allowing brake fluid to return when you take your foot of the brake. Maybe another reader/Ford tech can shed some light on this idea?

BTW, since you said it does it after just two miles and assuming you will pick it up this afternoon, tell the shop when you pick it up that you are going to road test it and that you will be right back with a smoking brake to show them. You can also ask for a service writer/mechanic/service manager to ride with you and show him.
