this may be the wrong board so if it is excuss me Have a old 73 chev pickup that all of a sudden won't idle, let off on the gas and it dies but restarts very easy and runs as long as you don't let off the gas. Rebuilt carb about 4 years ago and been running fine so any ideas, suggestions, comments would be greatly appreciated as it has been a long time since I have done much trouble shooting.
Thanks
Sounds like a vacuum leak, not necessarily right at the carb either.
This is a Ford board but unlike most Chevy fans we are tolerant and knowledgable too!
At the risk of not fixing the real problem, why not begin by just resetting the idle speed and balance the carb. Also, check timing and make sure the vac advance line runs to a port on the carb the has no vac at idle, but has vac above idle speed. I will also assume that it's in good tune and didn't need plugs, air filter, etc.
I'm thinking a little dirt in the idle circuit. First thing I'd try, (after checking for vacuum leaks) which probably won't work, is to pull out the idle screw(s) and shoot some carb cleaner into the holes, then put the screws back and readjust. Set 'em to 1 1/2 turns, start the engine, see if it will idle, adjust them for fastest idle then slowly turn in till the engine speed starts to drop, then back out 1/2 turn. If none of that works, pull the carb, check the base gasket, disassemble and clean/kit it if needed. If it still won't work, dump it and get another Ford! -TD
Thanks for the all the hints as I knew there were some very knowledgable people here - Bobcatv8 the chev is a hand me down - my ride is a 02 explorer thats why I come to this great forum. thanks again!
